Week 9 Story: Arjuna Battles Karna

Figure 1: Bow and Arrow Pixabay

"It’s not too late to turn back. You can let go of your anger." said Arjuna, bow in hand.

"Silence Arjuna, the Pandus are spoiled and this is my day of retribution!" says Karna, sneering and pointing his finger into Arjuna's face. Karna growls to Arjuna "I will rain down every punishment upon you that I can imagine. I will make you pay for everything that you've done to me.".

And with that statement, Karna leaps at Arjuna bow drawn and arrow nocked. Arjuna hunches down, lowering his weight and shifting his left foot back, ready to dodge the impending attack. Karna looses his arrow, but Arjuna lunges right and Karna's arrow goes whistling past his ear.  Arjuna and Karna simultaneously nock their bows and strafe each other. Karna, mad with bloodlust shoots first, but Arjuna dodges again and shoots his own arrow at Karna. Karna narrowly ducks the attack and runs, weaving between trees, rocks, and other cover; as a tree breaks their line of sight, Arjuna releases an arrow where he expected Karna to emerge, but Karna pivots behind the tree, appearing opposite the side that Arjuna expected him. Karna fires his own arrow, and narrowly deflects the attack with bow. In doing so however, the arrow cuts Arjuna’s bowstring, who cries out “Hold, my weapon is broken! Hold!”.

Hearing this, Karna stops and waits as Arjuna wraps his leg around his bow and bends it, and then Karna looses an arrow at Ajuna, who, entangled with his bow, could not defend himself. Arjuna screams in pain as the arrow pierces his side, but he continues to string his bow, even as more arrows tear into him. Repairing his bow, Arjuna continues to battle Karna. Their arrows filled the air and cast a great shadow over the land, but Karna, blinded by the illusion of his certain victory, allowed his aim to deteriorate. He aimed an arrow that would miss Arjuna, and Arjuna, realizing that the arrow would miss, took the opportunity to release multiple arrows at once. Karna danced around these arrows, and moves exactly where Arjuna guessed he would, and Arjuna’s next missile pierces Karna’s foot, nailing it to the ground.

“Hold!” yells Karna, reaching down to remove the arrow from his foot, but Arjuna’s arrows continued to rain down and pierce him. “Hold I said” Karna yells again. “Hold? I’m sorry, doesn’t that mean keep fighting even though I can’t fight back?” replies Arjuna. Before Karna could respond, Arjuna pierces him between the eyes with another arrow, ending the fight and bringing the war one death closer to the end.

Author's note:
All I really did was add some details and set the fight on foot. Really, I just wanted to try describing events. That's all folks.

  1. Hi Jenon,
Karna is one of my favorite characters from the Mahabharata, so I was really excited that your story was over him and Arjuna. I like how you showed Karna’s character to having a lot more rage towards Arjuna in your story. I thought that it was interesting how Arjuna directly shoot Karna than from behind his back. Overall, I really enjoyed your story.

  2. Howdy Jenon,
I thought your story was great. It kept me interested throughout the entirety of it. I thought the fact that you made a relatively action-packed story was awesome. I feel like not too many people include battle or war scenes in their original stories, not to bash anyone else's work. Overall, I thought your story was well written and was very entertaining.
